Really sorry to see this situation. Since you weren't the one who made these outgoing transactions, this appears to have been a theft.

The most common cause of this version of theft is from using an online seed generator.

Hi Winston,
Is there no way of getting my tokens back since fraud has been committed?
There should be safe guards in place to reverse fraudulent transactions certainly when a hardware wallet is not available.
Can the culprit be traced by the address it went to and reversed?
THIS REALLY SUCKS AND I AM OUT $37,341 US !

@Byron
Horrible situation indeed.
As frustrating as this is to hear right now, this is sort of the nature of cryptocurrency. There was a big seed generator fraud website going around a few months ago, and when people asked me what could be done about their stolen funds I recommended looking into some sort of class action legal suit. I don't know what ever came of that, but I still think it would be worth a shot if you could find a few others who used the same online seed generator that you did, and link up to file a class action suit of some sort.

If the thief is intelligent, they will have covered their bases and be impossible to trace down, but it's worth a shot at least, right?

Sorry again to see your situation. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you.

You guys are also to blame. Before you even issue tokens for sale you should have a secured way of storing them for all your token holders. You haven't done so. If you are unable to have a hardware supplier like Ledger Nano S carry your wallet, you should have in place a secured step by step procedure they can follow to secure their tokens. (like having seeds generated through your secured web-site.) I am done with all cryptocurrencies that don't have this in place to protect their token holders. IOTA is directly participating in making this the wild wild west. Shame on you. The majority of token holders are NOT computer wizards. ESTABLISH PROTECTIVE MEASURES FOR YOUR TOKEN HOLDERS. Support the people who are supporting you!

Everyone agrees that IOTA isn't the most user friendly protocol right now, so I sympathize with you on that point. But the key is to avoid getting involved with difficult things that you're uncomfortable with. Most people should wait a year or two for the IOTA protocol to be much more built-out and foolproof for everyday users.

Please remember that I'm just a random guy who answers these forum questions in my free time, and I don't think any of the Foundation members post in here. Sorry again for your difficulties, and best of luck in the future.

Fully agree Byron, iota is at fault for our lost funds... all we did was buy the iota and deposit into an IOTA wallet we thought was safe... IOTA is the worse project out there

IOTA is not at fault for users who use a malicious third party scam website to generate their seeds. I'm really sorry to see that bad practices have led to the loss of funds for you, but it's important to keep the facts straight in this situation. Blaming user error on another entity besides the user is the fastest way to ensure more user error at the expense of continued ignorance. This community needs to be spreading the word about safe seed generation rather than blaming an entity that has nothing to do with the issue at hand

"This community needs to be spreading the word about safe seed generation rather than blaming an entity that has nothing to do with the issue at hand"
As I stated previously,
Token providers should make sure they have in place a fully functional (not in beta testing) wallet that can be downloaded directly from there site including seed generation, phrases etc before their tokens are traded publicly. By not having this in place, they are not supporting the community that is SUPPORTING THEM!

This entity "IOTA" has everything to do with this issue at hand cause they are not supporting the community that supports them (by securing their community with safeguards).

Huge problems in the cryptoshere at this point include,

- Not having fully tested secured wallets
- Not having complete addresses on their web-sites
- Not having customer support phone numbers
- Not having public relations spokespersons
- Not being available to the community that supports them. In stead having to voice concerns on forums like this.

What does IOTA have to say about this?

I have never seen anywhere on the internet at the time of creating wallet back in November 2017 that IOTA had a warning to be wary of fake iota seed generating site... please.... iota has to take some accountability, at least to inform the community of this, a FB post, tweet or something that can get the message out, not just having people  scour through chats on the internet to find out that this is prevalent.

People who aren't comfortable with the current state of this technology should avoid using it. There's no reason to get involved with something that you don't understand and/or don't have time to keep up with when it's much easier and safer to wait a few years for the technology to be fully developed and production ready.

" - Not having customer support phone numbers "
If this is anyone's expectation of an open source software program, then that person should especially not be involved with this technology yet. Look, this isn't meant to be dismissive or derogatory, but all cryptocurrencies are bleeding edge technology that's simply a bunch of open source software projects. These aren't companies. The groups of developers behind them aren't CEOs or boards of directors trying to appease customers and turn a profit. The entire premise of this stuff is decentralization and distributed development. Customer support is not a thing in this space unless it's an independent third party (like this website -- just a few people who enjoy helping IOTA users in our spare time). I'm not saying that you're wrong to think that these projects should have a whole customer support branch, I'm just saying that you should re-assess your expectations, understand what this stuff is & does, and then act on different assumptions (there will be no customer support, so if that's a deal breaker, rather than staying and demanding customer support, it's best to watch and wait from afar without being involved).

" - Not being available to the community that supports them. In stead having to voice concerns on forums like this.  "
The guys behind IOTA are famously responsive and interactive with the community on discord. If you can catch one of them online, they're happy to have a conversation.

"What does IOTA have to say about this?"
IOTA has been very clear in the past that they only want tech savvy people involved who are willing to contribute to the project. This isn't made to be an investment vehicle, and they've explicitly said that they aren't going to waste their time on catering to speculators trying to make a quick buck. People treat this like it's heresy, but cmon, it's not a big deal to wait another two years before getting involved if you aren't comfortable with the current state of affairs. It takes time to build out these projects.

Hi Winston,
Is there no way of getting my tokens back since fraud has been committed?
There should be safe guards in place to reverse fraudulent transactions certainly when a hardware wallet is not available.
Can the culprit be traced by the address it went to and reversed?
THIS REALLY SUCKS AND I AM OUT $37,341 US !

The Foundation has posted numerous times about recommended safe practices for seed generation. The subreddit has full guides which stress the importance of not using online seed generators. The iotasupport website has instructions which warn against using an online seed generator. Asking around on slack/discord, everyone recommends against ever touching an online seed generator. This forum includes links to safe practices for seed generation. I'm really sorry for the loss of your balance, but lack of available information is not the reason for that issue.

So, what is the outcome?

Here's a post with all of the currently known relevant information:
https://forum.helloiota.com/post/18771

It looks like Europol arrested the suspect. I guess we'll have to wait on further news.
