Hello everybody,
Could you please tell me how the iota project is now? 
I've read some good research papers and interesting proof of concepts, but it also seems some initiatives, like the ecosystem, are no more.
So if we're looking to do an energy finance project with blockchain, can we use iota?  Is it ready for production use?  Is there any developer or support community out there for it?

This is a good question. The IOTA Foundation seems to have been hard at work on solving some theoretical algorithmic hurdles over the past year, and finally published their solution recently. I guess they're now in the stages of implementation. This means that IOTA in its current state will not be exactly how the final version ends up looking. That might make it tough to describe the current status as "production ready". You can build projects on top of IOTA right now, however, since it's just the underlying consensus mechanisms that'll be overhauled over the coming months and years.
