Hello,
I purchased 230Mi back in March, and just tried to open with my seed and it says 0 balance. I generated close to 100 addresses and attached them to the tangle, and used multiple nodes.
However, where this is different, is in the transfer history, a day after the funds were deposited to DDZMFSOKQQDOAWOBBRTWXQMWGPNBBSZJKZXPIRGRKDBWHNBPJGTJZTMTSQANUTQTCKAOLBYFUFYAMTJMZUNHTTBZOW
it shows they were sent to:
LDTBGXN9KXLNWFJNEJQFSKCWESOBWXUOIHIZEVGRLRQZQOSSRMDZHOVFQN9SXICZRHXGFJQCXZGXZGKPWTID9RJVXW
Hash:
VRTLGAC9PHFQLTVYJSMSFAZCMURPAYOZUPUXGGBRQUXBLAIVMSJGBBACPUPHWAVBF9DNPKIZPBBPZ9999
Following this trail, it seems like the IOTA’s were moved around and eventually converted to USD.
Any help or direction would be appreciated

Hi @jromfo,
welcome to Hello IOTA!

I don’t think your coins ended up on an exchange yet. They got mixed with other funds from different addresses and ended up here on May 9th: https://thetangle.org/address/JJGXUUXBGNZWYU9UPQ9HXBCCWGVPSNQJAAESSN9ILGYKEBYHSKNTQQPSNCGTT9NWKESZNOMTVAURJOOLZ
I find it a bit odd that it all adds up to exactly 1 Gi.
However, if you haven’t made that transaction you’ve posted, then somebody else did it. Can you remember how you’ve created your seed?

Unfortunately, there’s not much you could do now, except file a claim with your local (cybercrime) police and hope that the thief gets caught.
If that ever happens, you will have to provide proof that those stolen coins belong to you.
So even if you don't want to involve the police, please make sure to keep your seed and all evidence of where your bought your coins from and where you sent them to afterwards (for example safe your trade history and your withdrawal history from your Bitfinex account or wherever you purchased your coins).

I'm sorry that you've lost your funds.

Thanks for the reply.

I honestly cannot remember if I used a seed generator online or not, as I purchased it in March and didn't look back since.  I searched my chrome history on 3 of the major seed generator websites and it didn't come up.  However, https://www.iotaseedgenerator.online looks oddly familiar.

I understand, using such a generator online like this due to my laziness to make one myself is my own fault and I need to own it.  When you think about it, it seems silly IOTA wallet doesn't have the ability to generate a seed randomly to use for the first time after install.  Especially, since looking at forums, and other community pages, a lot of people have made similar mistakes.  Phishing is a big problem these days, and whatever can be done to minimize its success should be done to protect the investors.

Regardless of ideas of what should be done in the future, I am where I am at this moment.  Thanks for the advice, I will collect all the information on my purchase, transactions and phone my local police to report this.

You're welcome!

For a little status update on the theft situation, you can also read my posts page 46 of this thread:
https://forum.helloiota.com/9284/Call-to-action-lets-catch-the-thief?PageIndex=46
There’s little video snippets somewhere with Koen (IOTA’s Cyber Security Advisor) talking about the theft and how investigations are going.

The Lightwallet actually did have a seed generator for some time in its early days. But from what I’ve heard, people constantly failed to properly backup their seeds and then blamed it on the wallet when they lost access to their funds because of their own mistake...
Result: the seed generator got removed from the Lightwallet.

But I see that you understand that this incident was caused by a criminal and his malicious website, not by the wallet.
Just try to learn as much as you can from this to make sure that such a thing never happens to you again (no matter if it’s IOTA, any other crypto or any other „password“-protected stuff).

However, all self-responsibility aside, you’re absolutely right about the phishing and protecting users as much as possible. And that’s exactly what the Foundation aims for with the Trinity wallet. Trinity comes with some great improvements, including an integrated seed generator. Smile
I suggest also you (re-) read this article, that Koen wrote in order to protect the users. In the future, only use one of the methods he describes:
https://blog.iota.org/the-secret-to-security-is-secrecy-d32b5b7f25ef
Once Trinity wallet comes out of Beta you can of course also use Trinity’s seed generator.

All the best for you!

Hi,

I just saw this thread and been posting on reddit when it happened.
https://old.reddit.com/r/Iota/comments/7rtqgd/iota_stolen_no_online_seed_generator_used/dszmbcu/

It was a dark day in my life being that I really generated 10's of good addresses and kept them in a list.
For lazyness I didn't want to generate a new one so I just picked one of the older seeds to keep my funds, this was actually one that was generated with the fraudulant generator.

I think most of them came from bitfinex.

ZILFVVBNHLLPO9DFAOPTZT9EBVWIIDADVEKQZRTTZSNITC9LRTFRAQGSQIMSTERNOIYPMXULNKFDYCZBDSJWHOT9GA

The transaction:
https://thetangle.org/transaction/OTLFTQNIFMBNYYWYUKMQDGCLS9MF9DRH9QQTXJR9DHRJGOWOY9VQHASOKPSHJZBJWJ9UBACELRPGA9999

The address everything got send to: AFRWMHCVDDEISJYVFOUTECZKZRXNDJVHFEOLICZJWDBRN9SUXIDAYQDHNLQQIDHI9LRXNFUPYR9WEGHPY

These addresses of about 32.3Gi got stolen. Just wanted to leave it here since a few months back I learned that the IOTA Foundation actually knew where the funds were. I already gave up on it but now there might be a chance again and prefer to have this posted before that moment comes.

If you could add them to that list you keep on google sheets that would be great!

Hey @ovanwijk,
thanks for your post and welcome to Hello IOTA!

I'm not sure if that Google spreadsheet still gets updated, but I think it's connected to this community initiative: https://iotawalletloss.claims/.

What you should definitely do is to file a claim with your local (cybercrime) police, even if it's just for the record.
If the thief ever gets caught, you will have to provide proof that those stolen coins belong to you.
Please make sure to keep your seed and all evidence of where your bought your coins from and where you sent them to afterwards.
Save your trade history and your withdrawal history from your Bitfinex account or wherever you purchased your coins.

I'm very sorry that you've lost your funds!

Hi there,

Same way as Ovanwijk, my funds where stolen as well.
https://thetangle.org/transaction/FVJQWLARKC9HHYJPNLHRJYKKZCXM9ZGQCUDOULOCDCZIPKATVPOGQEHJBTSIHYFQSETKS9LZKEFBZ9999
I could track it down to : FVJQWLARKC9HHYJPNLHRJYKKZCXM9ZGQCUDOULOCDCZIPKATVPOGQEHJBTSIHYFQSETKS9LZKEFBZ9999
and then it gets scattered.

After the message from the Foundation I thought it could maybe help and even a slight chance of ever seeing it back.

Thanks for your help!!
